Whether it’s the planet Earth spinning around the Sun or shift workers moving between night and day, our time is determined by a variety of spinning events. Certain are obvious, while others are less so.

For example, most people know that the Earth rotates on its axis throughout the day. Scientists have been able to measure the small variations in the speed of rotation using Atomic clocks. This variation makes the solar day feel longer or shorter than it actually is. Atomic clocks are required to adjust the time periodically to adjust for this. This is known as leap seconds.

Another instance of a rotational event is the Coriolis effect which is the constant wobbling of the Earth’s rotational axis when it orbits the Sun. This motion helps define the rules of weather patterns. It can explain why fun rides such as Ferris wheels and carousels should be built with an incredibly strong side-to-side bar, also known as an axle.
